21 Dec.

Moulton Magpies away on a windy day and a muddy pitch, we thought it would be tough going and so it proved.

Straight after the whistle we were on the front foot, moving forward with some excellent passing between Liam and Ethan, working the ball through to Josh but the shot went just wide.

The next few minutes were hard work.  Moulton were attacking strongly and Ollie and Robert had plenty to do on the edge of the area, supported by Tom in goal who pulled off several saves, one in particular a great stop right on the goal line.  Alistair was putting himself about making some important interceptions and clearances and Harrison had a couple of runs into what seemed like space but was closed down quickly by their defence.

We could see a goal coming but it wasn’t until just into extra time that Moulton managed to squeeze one past Tom for 1-0 at half time, probably a fair reflection of play.

The second half started in the same way, Moulton attacking.  But we were playing with the wind now and began to turn the tide.  We won several corners and I lost count of our attacking throw-ins.  Liam had a shot, followed by one from Ethan and another from Ollie but we didn’t get the breakthrough.  Our best chance was a free kick inside their area due to a pass-back but unfortunately Liam’s shot hit their wall.  We also felt we could have had a penalty when their keeper took Harrison out off the ball.

A few moments at the end when either side could have got another.  Moment of the game was when Harrison made a very good save with his legs, the ball span upwards and Robert made an excellent clearance via an overhead kick off the line!  Then we had a couple more chances but it wasn’t to be.

A 1-0 loss the final result, but the boys played really well against a very organised team with some very good players.  We thought they were the best team we’ve played this year, certainly the only one who played a passing game to a similar (maybe better) level than ours and actually played for each other. We’ll get them next time!

Man of the match today is Ethan.  He put in a strong performance in the first half, making some great tackles, running forward and he is beginning to distribute the ball well to the front players.  He then volunteered to spend some time in goal in the second half and made a good save or two.  Great “team” performance, well done.

So that’s the end of 2013 for the boys.  So far this season we’ve won 9 out of 12 games and have a goal difference of +21……not a bad result and all the boys are making fast progress, increasing their contribution to the team all the time.

Rob and I have really enjoyed training the boys, they are committed and generally do what we ask – thanks for the beers, they will be enjoyed (but not tonight!!)

Have a great Christmas and see you in the new year!
